Basics of Horses / Fun Facts: General overview of equine and the horse industry, along with fun and interesting facts. Time: ~20-30 min. Hands-on: books, pictures, tack
Breeds: Most requested! Describes traits and characteristics of about 26 different breeds, ranging from Miniatures to Drafts. Time: ~45 min. Hands-on: books, pictures, etc.
Disciplines and Types: Describes difference between Western and English Types. Describes about 20 different disciplines, including those that will be featured in the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Time: ~40 min. Hands-on: pictures, etc.
History of the Horse: Discusses primitive horses vs. today's horses, along with domestication of horses. Time: ~30 min.
Horses and History: Discusses the role of the horse throughout history from medieval times, to horses in the White House and even horses in Hollywood! Time: ~30 min. Hands-on: pictures, etc.
Aging a Horse by its Teeth: Lists equine dental terms and explains how to age a horse by the changes its teeth undergoes. Time: ~20 min. Hands-on: pictures and charts
Basics of Hoof Care: Discusses how to clean hooves, factors that effect hoof growth, and common hoof problems. Time: ~30 min.
Colors, Markings & Brands: Describes correct terms for horse colors, facial and leg markings, and other types of methods for identifying your horse. Time: ~40 min. Hands-on: books, pictures, etc.
Economics of Owning a Horse: Discusses necessary basic tack and equipment needed if owning a horse, and the average price for each item. Also discusses monthly needs/expenses of a horse (feed, hay, ferrier bills, etc.). Time: ~30 min. Hands-on: tack items
Western and English Tack: General overview of western and english tack items. Can be done separate or together. Time: ~35 min. Hands-on: Tack items
Bits and Bitting: Discusses bit selection, categorizing bits, variations in bits, and how a bit should fit. Time: ~30-45 min. Hands-on: bits
Safety for You & Your Horse - Horseless: Basics of barn safety and ground safety. Discusses a horse's vision, proper ways to catch, lead, tie, release, and move around the horse. Also discusses safe clothing and gear for the rider. Time: ~30-40 min Hands-on: safety situations map and tying knots
Safety for You & Your Horse - With a Horse: Basics of barn safety and ground safety demonstrated with a live horse. Group must provide horse. Discusses a horse's vision, proper ways to catch, lead, tie, release, and move around the horse. Also discusses safe clothing and gear for the rider.
